Women in Business: An Inspiring Journey of Nicole Kilian
At Le Réussi®, we take pride in celebrating women who break barriers and lead with passion and purpose. Today, we bring you an inspiring interview with Nicole Kilian, a first-generation scientist, parasitologist, and science communicator. Nicole shares her journey, achievements, and advice for young women pursuing professional careers.
Q: Can you share a bit about yourself and what drives your passions?
A: I am a first-generation scientist working in parasitology and malaria research. Malaria parasites have fascinated me for years, and I find it exciting to decipher small aspects of their complex biology. A few years ago, I ventured into science communication and recently launched an interview page, Science Speaks (www.science-speaks.com), where I highlight other scientists and their incredible work. For an hour or so, my interviewees take me out of my malaria-focused world into their diverse scientific journeys, and it's such a pleasure to see how varied scientific research can be.
Q: Tell us about your work. What does your research focus on?
A: In my lab, we study how malaria parasites interact with their human hosts. We are also working on simplifying the detection of malaria parasites in endemic regions, ensuring that patients can receive proper care quickly.
Q: What motivated you to pursue this profession?
A: I've always been fascinated by science and spent my free time reading my middle school biology books. Initially, I wanted to become a veterinarian and even completed a long internship at a veterinary practice in my hometown when I was 13. However, I realized that being a vet wasn’t for me and decided to pursue biology instead.
Q: What are some of your key achievements so far?
A: Earning my PhD was a pivotal moment, and I celebrated it with my family and friends on the day I defended my thesis. Becoming an Assistant Professor was another big milestone. Beyond that, every published study feels like an achievement. I make it a point to celebrate with cake whenever a manuscript is accepted. Even small victories, like successful experiments, feel like achievements. As André De Shields said, "The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing."
On a personal note, my biggest achievement is my son, Silas, who was born five weeks ago. Although I’m on maternity leave, I still attend hybrid conferences and online meetings where Silas often makes appearances. It’s great having him as my little conference buddy!
Q: What’s your personal style, and how does fashion influence your daily life?
A: I don’t think I have a specific style; I mix and match a lot. Fashion is fun, and I enjoy seeing what others are wearing. One of my students, for example, sews her outfits from scratch, and it’s such a pleasure to see her creations. I’m also in awe of the creativity of fashion designers. Whenever I’m in New York City, I make sure to visit The Costume Institute’s annual exhibition at The Met. If time permits, I love watching runway shows by various designers.
Q: What do you look for in luxury women’s clothing?
A: I value durability in clothing pieces I can wear for many years. I rarely throw clothes away, so many items in my wardrobe have been with me for over a decade.
Q: What are your go-to outfits for special occasions?
A: Interestingly, I used to avoid dresses and skirts when I was younger, but now, they’re all I wear! For special occasions, I typically choose a dress paired with a nice blazer or shawl. I have several go-to outfits that have served me well over the years.
Q: What advice would you give to young women pursuing a professional career?
A: Don’t be afraid to forge your own path. Seeking guidance from other women who have walked similar paths can be incredibly helpful.
