Can You Share a Bit About Yourself and What Drives Your Passions?

I am an accomplished educator with nearly 30 years of experience in higher education, currently serving as a tenured professor of communication at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. My passions center around teaching, mentoring, and inspiring students, particularly in active listening, nonverbal communication, and presentational speaking. I am also deeply invested in integrating advanced technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically large language models (LLMs), into communication studies. Currently, I am expanding my expertise in AI, machine learning, and prompt engineering and exploring how these technologies can reshape industries, including education, healthcare, finance, retail, and entertainment.

What Does Your Role as a College Professor Entail?

In my current role as a Professor of Communication at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas I teach undergraduate courses in communication and mentor students on various research projects. My work focuses on cultivating critical thinking, active listening, and communication skills in my students. I’ve developed and taught several courses, including one of my personal favorites, COMM 2357: Active Listening. I also work with my colleagues to integrate modern technologies into our curriculum, aiming to enhance students’ digital literacy and better prepare them for an evolving job market.

What motivated you to pursue your current profession or role?
My motivation stems from a deep love for teaching and a desire to make a difference in students' lives. I’ve always been passionate about education, influenced by my family’s strong academic background. I initially began my academic journey in communication studies and later developed a particular interest in performance studies and active listening. After serving in the U.S. Army, I transitioned back to academia, where I found my calling in helping students find their voices, both literally and figuratively. I believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for personal and societal growth.

What Are Some of Your Proudest Accomplishments in Your Career So Far?
Some of my key achievements include being named the 2024 Change Maker in Personal & Professional Development by Austin Woman Magazine and receiving the Outstanding International Listening Association (ILA) Educator of the Year award in 2021. I am proud of my research, particularly the papers I’ve presented at national and international prestigious conferences, and the publications I’ve contributed to, including co-editing the upcoming second edition of Listening Across Lives textbook. I have also led initiatives at my university that have increased student engagement and success in communication studies.

How Would You Describe Your Personal Style, and How Does It Reflect Your Identity?

While I am not opposed to wearing denim or jeans, I have never worn a pair, and certainly never shorts of any kind while teaching! My personal style leans more towards classic, clean, and polished looks, especially in professional settings. Living in Austin, Texas, where the heat can be intense, I often opt for natural linen fabrics to stay cool and comfortable without sacrificing style. I also believe that how people present themselves is important, especially in professional environments, and I often remind my students, You never get a second chance to make a first impression. So, dress to impress. Fashion allows me to project confidence and professionalism, whether I'm in the classroom, at a conference, or meeting with colleagues.

What Do You Priorities When Selecting Luxury Women’s Clothing?

When it comes to luxury women’s clothing, I prioritize craftsmanship, timeless designs, and comfort. I appreciate pieces that are well-made and can transition easily between professional and personal settings. I’m particularly drawn to designers who focus on both elegance and practicality. For example, I admire the work of female designers like Kendra Scott from Texas, known for her beautiful jewelry collections, and Tory Burch, whose designs reflect a blend of classic and modern styles. I also draw inspiration from former First Lady Michelle Obama, whose style evolution has been iconic. She effortlessly combines vibrant hues and eye-catching patterns with a mix of high-end designer pieces and more accessible ready-to-wear items. Her standout fashion moments have included designs by Naeem Khan, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Balenciaga, and even brands like H&M and J.Crew. Michelle Obama’s ability to blend sophistication with accessibility is something I deeply admire and often consider when selecting luxury clothing.

What Are Your Favorite Go-To Outfits for Special Occasions?

For special occasions, I tend to gravitate towards tailored blazers paired with elegant dresses or high-quality pants. I enjoy wearing chic and sophisticated pieces, ensuring I feel confident whether I’m giving a speech, attending an event, or simply networking. A bold accessory or a well-placed pop of color often completes my look, adding a touch of personal flair. Of course, one of the most special occasions is graduation, where faculty don their academic regalia. I am especially proud to wear mine—the University of Texas at Austin doctoral regalia. With its deep russet color, gold accents, and unparalleled design, it is a reflection of the pinnacle of academic achievement and a symbol of my pride in being a UT-A alumna. The gold UT Tower embroidered on the lapels adds a distinctive touch, and I always appreciate the design's elegance and tradition. As President Faulkner once said, those who wear it become “emblems of the best of Texas and eminent ambassadors of The University of Texas at Austin.” Plus, its rich color and detailed design allow UT graduates to stand out in any academic crowd—a fact I can’t help but enjoy with a sense of pride.

What Advice Would You Give to Young Women Looking to Build a Professional Career?

My advice to young women is to embrace resilience, authenticity, and continuous learning. In today’s world, it’s essential to not only master your field but also to stay curious, listen, and be adaptable. Speak truth to Power. Dance like no one is watching. Be kind to yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step outside your comfort zone—whether that means pursuing advanced degrees, seeking out mentors, or embracing new technologies. Most importantly, love, Love LOVE who you are. Remain true to your authentic self, and never underestimate the power of your voice and presence in any space.
